Thud the discworld board game7/8/2023 For some reason Fred had seen fit to put another on a stool near the one occupied cell. "No point in hitting "em with something that bounces, eh?" he added, looking at Bashfullsson, who smiled, once again, his strange little smile. "Didn"t know we had one, Mister Vimes," said Fred. "Fetch him out, then," said Vimes, and seeing Fred"s enquiring look at Bashfullsson he went on: "This gentleman is here to make sure we don"t use the rubber truncheon, sergeant: "He gets Right 5c only if we"ve got Teatime Assortment: That"s Rights 5 and 5b," he added, looking Bashfullsson up and down. He didn"t want his tea and biscuit, at any rate. I read him his rights but don"t ask me if he understood "em. "Didn"t get as much as a sentence out of him. "Captain Carrot tried talking to him for nearly half an hour, and you know he"s got a way with people," he said.

Matt yglesias 1 billion7/8/2023 He offers a well-deliberated critique of housing policies that he does not hesitate to call racist, policies that forbid the construction of multiple-family dwellings in suburban and exurban areas. And what of already overcrowded American cities and their minuscule amounts of affordable housing stock? It’s the last matter at which the author’s argument really takes off. But how? One ingredient is a far more liberal immigration policy: “The solution to the illegal immigration crisis is to let more people come legally, not tie ourselves into knots trying to stop the flow.” Another ingredient is a massive expansion of the social welfare state to allow for such things as family leave and tax concessions. Vox co-founder and editor Yglesias proposes that the only way to keep China at bay is to beat the Chinese at their own game, growing a population of 1 billion Americans. It’s enough to make a zero population growth advocate faint. An argument that blends demography, economics, and politics to suggest a way to maintain America’s great-power status in the 21st century.

Kitty and the midnight hour7/8/2023 I picked this book on a whim, wanting to read something new and was very surprised at how much I love the series! I’ve been reading the books for a few days now and I’m already on book three. I’ve never given a lot of thought to how different members of a pack would treat each other, and exactly how much power the alpha dog/wolf in a pack would have, but these issues and more are explored throughout the book. Carrie Vaughn has created werewolf packs and vampire families in a way that makes the dynamics seem very believable. In this book, the author weaves a tale of fantasy and adventure as she lays the groundwork for characters and new realities that includes vampires, werewolves, bounty hunters, etc. In a nutshell: In Kitty in the Midnight Hour, Carrie Vaughn has cleverly created a wonderfully entertaining start to a very promising new supernatural series (there are currently six books available). Perfect for : Personal reading, anyone who likes vampire or werewolf stories Genre: Fiction / Fantasy / Vampire / WerewolfĮdition: Paperback – many thanks to the publisher (Hachette Book Group) for sending me a copy to review Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (November 1, 2005) Title: Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, Book 1)

The jesus incident by frank herbert7/8/2023 Theriex to the clones, Frank Herbert, The Jesus Incident From the nothing else comes no reflection of Self, nothing returns. And where there is only one, there is nothing else. It is through the other that the Self is known. As will be the norm, you are welcome to comment and I’ll do my best to respond thoughtfully. So, let’s dive in to some of the ideas I’ve fleshed out a bit and see where things go from there. Is the theme of human conflict with other selves evident yet? In my next piece, I’ll attempt to use this book as an argument against conflict (oh, the hypocrisy!) by outlining the final paradox that I saw in the book. The Jesus Incident contains conflict between humans and the native flora and fauna of Pandora, between humans and humans, and between humans and Ship. I love when authors create religions, I’m making a note that I need to write a post about the utility of religion in scifi. Like the Abrahamic texts from which Herbert sometimes quotes at the start of select chapters, God is testing people to become their best selves through a terrible and vague challenge to worShip satisfactorily. This book centered on a hostile alien planet aptly named Pandora, where a recently-sentient voidShip takes on the role of God to its crew which it had transported from an Earth on the verge of destruction by supernova. Yesterday I wrapped up my first reading of Frank Herbert’s The Jesus Incident, which, unsurprisingly, had very little to do with Jesus.

They tolerate each other's existence until Germany finally invades. Meanwhile, Isabelle Rossignol, Vianne's little sister, is expelled from another boarding school due to behavior issues, and goes to live with her father, Julien, in Paris. War looms, however, and Antoine is called to the front in an anticipated defense against German aggression. Her existence is seemingly idyllic, filled with picnics, gardening, and plenty of time to spend with her loving family. Vianne Mauriac lives in the French countryside with her husband, Antoine and their daughter, Sophie. Over the course of her journey to the home and interacting with her son, she recalls the story of love and survival that was her experience during the war. Their stories are told in retrospect while we follow an elderly French immigrant in 1995, who is living out her last days in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.Ī woman with a terminal illness is being moved to a nursing home by her son, and finds an old trunk in the attic of her home, filled with memories of a past life. It follows the struggles of two French sisters- the quiet, cautious Vianne and bold, impetuous Isabelle-and their loved ones during the Nazi occupation. We remain."Ī historical fiction by Kristin Hannah set in pre-war and occupied France during World War II. "I know now what matters, and it is not what I lost.

The necklace by claire mcmillan7/7/2023 More than just a piece of jewelry, the necklace links Nell to a long-buried family secret. As predatory relatives begin circling and art experts begin questioning the necklace's provenance, Nell turns to the only person she thinks she can trust-the attractive and ambitious estate lawyer who definitely is not part of the old-money crowd.
