The woman in cabin 10 by ruth ware7/6/2023 This could be her way of finally getting that promotion if Lo can just keep it together enough to network among important people and help put their small travel magazine, Velocity, on the map. But she still has to go on this week long luxury cruise assignment for work since her boss is on maternity leave. She got in a huge fight with her boyfriend. When a break-in occurs in her apartment with her present, it brings her fear and anxiety to a whole new high. Laura Blacklock (she goes by Lo) suffers from extreme anxiety to the point of needing medicine to keep it under control. I guess I'll delve into the plot a tiny bit to get my point across while still avoiding spoilers. It felt like the author just replaced a few facts with similar enough things.changed the train into a luxury cruise liner. Usually even with all the similarities of thrillers these days, I can find enough originality in the story to feel the author didn't *try* to follow the same formula. It also felt like a not as good carbon copy of The Girl on the Train. I found I was expected to suspend my disbelief even more in The Woman in Cabin 10 and I wasn't having any of it. I enjoyed Ruth Ware's debut a lot more than this one.

The writing style also remains fluent and while this book has little to nothing to do anymore with Beauty and the Beast, the story remains magical. Honestly, I think she tied everything together beautifully by switching between the four main characters in this final book. Adjusting to their new positions has been a precarious balancing act and the looming fight with Emberfall never allows them a moment rest.Īs the deadline nears and old dangers re-appear, can they find a way forward without any blood loss? Or can trust, once broken, never truly be repaired after all? An amazing finaleĪfter the sudden change in narration in book two, I was curious to see what Brigid Kemmerer would have picked for this conclusion. In Syhl Shallow, life isn’t straightforward for Lia Mara and Grey either. But doubt has seeped into their relationship, and it becomes increasingly hard to fight for whatever trust remains between them. While Rhen struggles with coming to terms with his newfound half-brother, he also desperately tries to hold on to his throne and to the bond he shares with Harper. Surrender, or they would take the kingdom by force. A Vow so Bold and Deadly Overview A Vow so Bold and DeadlyĪt the end of book 2, Grey and Lia Mara gave an ultimatum to Rhen.

Rainbow rowell simon snow series7/6/2023 Agent: Christopher Schelling, Selectric Artists. It's all about the meta, to put it simply. It's based off of fan-fiction, about a fictional novel series, in another fiction novel, and can be related to the Harry Potter series by a sort of painting by numbers technique, if you like. Reading the trilogy in order is highly recommended for a thorough understanding of the characters and events. Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell, is a book that is meta in it's concept. Rowell makes all of Cath’s relationships-with her father Wren her acerbic roommate, Reagan and, especially, Reagan’s ex Levi (who practically takes up residence in their room to woo the skeptical and extremely nervous Cath)-touching and utterly real. Parents need to know that Any Way the Wind Blows is the final installment in the fantasy Simon Snow Trilogy by popular YA author Rainbow Rowell. Rowell (Eleanor & Park) blends Cath’s first year of college with excerpts of both the “canon” Simon Snow books and Cath’s distinctly non-canonical fanfic, to create a funny and tender coming-of-age story that’s also the story of a writer finding her voice. Since Cath would rather stay in her room and write than do anything involving other people, that first year is terrifying, which she expected, but also heartbreaking and romantic, which she did not. While Cath is an expert on Simon’s life, she finds her own difficult, especially now that she’s starting college and Wren doesn’t want them to room together. Cath Avery’s life has two polestars: Wren, her identical twin, and the Simon Snow series, a Harry Potter–like publishing phenomenon that Cath has been reading-and rewriting, as a hugely popular fanfiction author-for years.

Depending on where you live, you might not be able to met up with friends the way you did before. Lock downs across the world have caused us to rethink the way we communicate. These interactions can be just as impactful as a breakup or a new romance. We treat friendships like solid unmovable connections, but the reality is that we a making new friends, drift apart from friends, and fight with friends all the time. I am a fan of books like Big Friendship that talk about friendships, and in particular female friendships, because people don’t want to talk about friendship and the impact is has on our lives. But just because we are all thinking about these things, doesn’t mean we know what we need or should be doing for ourselves and the people we love. It has made a lot of us rethink our goals, our relationships, and our personal boundaries. Orange and Purple circles overlap to create a small blue section, on a bright yellow background.Ģ020 has been an interesting year, to say the least. She was clever, and obviously cared a lot for her sisters. I liked Jo (who was actually rather Jo March-esque). Having said that I did like it as a story in itself. That was where the comparison ended though. I can’t really say that it was much like the fairytale. I read about it on somebody’s blog and really can’t remember whose it was (if it was you, sorry! Let me know), and I really liked the premise. Girls at the Kingfisher Club is based on the fairytale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and set in the prohibition era in the US. They dance until one night when they are caught in a raid. The girls, meanwhile, continue to dance, from Salon Renaud to the Swan and, finally, the Kingfisher, the club they come to call home. Together they elude their distant and controlling father, until the day he decides to marry them all off. She is the one who taught them how to dance, the one who gives the signal each night, as they slip out of the confines of their father’s townhouse to await the cabs that will take them to the speakeasy. Jo, the firstborn, “The General” to her eleven sisters, is the only thing the Hamilton girls have in place of a mother.

A dark hollow star7/5/2023 One of the biggest strengths of this book, I think, is the way Ashley Shuttleworth manages to craft a fantasy world that’s a little bit more divorced from human understandings of gender and sexuality than you see from most YA fantasy worlds. The fantasy world is also richly imagined, and the plot interesting. There’s even a part where someone has to explain timbits! I just thought it was a nice touch, and it helped me connect to the story a little bit more. As a Canadian myself, and as someone quite familiar with the city of Toronto, it was cool to be able to recognize little details about the environment. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read a fantasy book set in Canada before, and it was so refreshing. I don’t think American readers realize just how exhausting it is to have every book set in the States. I’ll admit that the main thing that drew me to this book was the setting. NetGalley kindly provided me with an advanced copy of this book ahead of its February 23rd release, in exchange for an honest and spoiler-free review. Throw in an entirely queer cast of characters and set it in Toronto, Ontario – only a few hours away from where I grew up – and I was completely sold. An urban fantasy billed as “ City of Bones meets The Cruel Prince” sounds just up my alley. When I was putting together my list of most anticipated 2021 releases at the end of last year, A Dark and Hollow Star immediately jumped out to me as one to keep an eye on.
